Punjab Police issues 3.35m licences, fines exceed Rs6.5b in traffic crackdown

LAHORE: Punjab Police continues its province-wide drive for improved public service delivery and strict enforcement of traffic laws, as more than 3.35 million driving licences have been issued during the current year, according to the police spokesperson.
The spokesperson said that over 3.55 million challans were issued for traffic violations, resulting in fines exceeding Rs6.5 billion. During the crackdown, 34,877 smoke-emitting vehicles were challaned, while 5,984 vehicles were impounded at police stations. In addition, fitness certificates of 28 vehicles were confiscated.
Inspector General of Police Punjab Abdul Kareem directed continued strict enforcement of traffic laws, stressing that implementation of amended regulations, reforms, and modern policing systems must be ensured at all costs.
He ordered that action against traffic violations be taken without discrimination and emphasised coordinated efforts by SHOs and SDPOs to eliminate chaotic traffic conditions and reduce road accidents.
The IG further directed intensified operations against overloading, overspeeding, underage driving, and one-way violations, along with effective recovery measures from defaulters of traffic challans.
Welfare cases of police personnel reviewed
In a related development, IG Punjab Abdul Kareem met police personnel and their families at the Central Police Office, where he heard grievances and issued on-the-spot instructions for relief.
According to an official statement, directions were issued to the Additional IG Welfare and Finance for financial assistance to the family of martyred Constable Ghulam Murtaza. Similar instructions were given on the application of Head Constable Arshad Ali.
The IG also directed concerned officers to provide relief to the widow of late sanitary worker Sadiq Masih.
On the application of Constable Muhammad Nawaz seeking promotion under the P Cadre, the Additional IG Punjab was instructed to consider the matter.
IG Abdul Kareem also issued orders on multiple other applications related to discipline, administration, promotion, and welfare matters, stressing timely resolution of issues faced by police personnel and their families.
