GUJRANWALA: Three-year-old twin brothers died after drowning in a stagnant water pond near their home in the Aroop area, police said on Sunday.
According to initial reports cited by police, the children, identified as Muhammad and Muhammad Mustafa, had gone out to play near their house but did not come back. Their mother then started looking for them and was later told that the children may have fallen into a nearby pit filled with water.
Rescue teams were informed of the incident and launched a search operation in the area. The bodies of both children were later recovered from the pond, which was located close to their residence.
Police officials arrived at the scene and shifted the bodies to a hospital, where legal formalities were started. However, police said the family did not permit post-mortem examinations.
An investigation into the incident is in progress. The SP Civil Lines also visited the site to supervise the inquiry.
Family members confirmed that the bodies were found in a nearby water-filled plot.
WASA says site was outside its jurisdiction
Meanwhile, WASA Managing Director Shabbir Hussain Butt said the incident did not take place within the authority’s jurisdiction. He added that there were no WASA pipelines in the area.
Butt said the location was part of a private housing plot that had accumulated water, which led to the fatal accident.
The official said the site was a private housing plot that had filled with water.
Police said further investigation was under way into the circumstances surrounding the drowning.
The incident occurred in the Aroop area of Gujranwala, where the children had gone out to play near their home before they were reported missing. Rescue personnel later recovered both bodies from the water after being alerted to the possibility that the twins had fallen into the pit.
