We’ll perform even better vs Myanmar football team, vow Mohibullah, Waqar ahead of Asian Cup Qualifier

LAHORE: Pakistan’s football camp is brimming with quiet confidence ahead of their crucial AFC Asian Cup Qualifier against Myanmar, as emerging voices in the squad, Mohibullah and Waqar, signal a team ready to raise its level.

The two players, reflecting a renewed sense of belief within the group, insist that Pakistan are not just prepared, but prepared to improve. “We are aiming to perform even better this time,” Mohibullah said, echoing a sentiment that has become central to the team’s mindset.

The high-stakes football match, scheduled for March 31, 2026, in Islamabad, will unfold behind closed doors due to prevailing government and security protocols, an unusual setting that removes the energy of the crowd but sharpens focus within the camp.

Yet inside Pakistan’s training environment, the absence of spectators has done little to dampen intensity. Instead, it has amplified internal competition and discipline. Mohibullah described a camp where players have fully bought into the coaching philosophy, responding with intent and consistency. According to him, each training cycle has brought visible progress, both individually and collectively.

“Every camp is adding something new. We are improving our understanding and getting valuable match exposure,” he noted, underlining the importance of continuity in a squad still shaping its identity.

Waqar, equally assured, pointed to a tangible shift in preparation standards. “This time, our preparation is stronger. We believe we can get the result,” he said, reflecting a growing belief that Pakistan can translate effort into outcome.

A key architect behind this transformation is head coach Nolberto Solano, whose approach has struck a balance between structure and freedom. Players speak of an environment that encourages expression without compromising discipline, an approach that has particularly benefited emerging domestic talent.

Waqar credited the coach for creating a space where players feel both responsible and relaxed. The emphasis on local players has injected hunger into the squad, with many seizing what they see as a defining opportunity to establish themselves at international level.

Training sessions, by all accounts, have been intense and purposeful. Tactical awareness, positional discipline, and confidence-building have formed the backbone of preparations. “The work we’ve put in has been excellent. Now it’s about delivering on the day,” Waqar said.

Physical conditioning has also been a major pillar. Under trainer Raiyan Abbasi, the squad has regained sharpness after the initial challenges of training during Ramadan. The players now appear fitter, more synchronised, and better equipped to handle the demands of competitive football.

Despite missing several experienced and overseas-based players, the squad’s unity remains intact. Mohibullah emphasised that familiarity among players has helped maintain cohesion, while younger inclusions have adapted quickly to tactical expectations. The atmosphere, he said, is built on trust and communication—an essential ingredient for a developing side.

Still, the closed-door setting presents its own psychological test. “Football thrives on crowd energy, so it’s definitely challenging,” Mohibullah admitted. “But we know our responsibility, and we’ll give everything on the pitch.”

Encouragement also comes from recent outings against stronger opponents, which, according to Waqar, have strengthened the team’s belief. Past performances against Myanmar further add to that confidence, offering a reference point as Pakistan prepare for another decisive encounter.
