Iranian families mourn as victims of US-Israeli strikes are laid to rest in Tehran

Tehran — Grief-stricken families gathered at Behesht-e Zahra cemetery in Tehran to bury loved ones killed in recent US-Israeli attacks on Iran, as the country continues to grapple with the aftermath of escalating conflict in the region.

Among those mourning was Marzia Razaei, who wept for her son, Erfan Shamei, a 23-year-old who lost his life in a blast at a military training camp just days before he was scheduled to return home on leave. Razaei, holding a large portrait of her son, recounted their final conversation, saying, “I hadn’t seen him for two months,” and shared that his last day before heading home was meant to have been Monday.

The war, which began on February 28 with a series of air strikes targeting Tehran and other Iranian cities, has resulted in the deaths of more than 1,300 Iranians so far, according to Iranian officials. The ongoing violence has plunged the Middle East into a deepening crisis, with families across Iran mourning their losses as new graves are prepared for the victims.

As gravediggers worked to prepare burial plots, the atmosphere at the cemetery was marked by sorrow and resilience. Mourners expressed their pain and determination, with one family member stating, “When you burn our hearts, you do not stop us.”

The recent escalation has left a profound impact on Iranian society, with the loss of life and the uncertainty of the conflict weighing heavily on those affected. The situation remains tense as families continue to bury their dead and seek solace amid ongoing hostilities.
