TEHRAN: Iran’s Legal Medicine Organisation has identified 3,375 people who were killed in what Iranian authorities described as US-Israeli airstrikes carried out between February 28 and April 7, according to state broadcaster IRIB.
Abbas Masjedi Arani, who heads the organisation, said the dead were identified through scientific and specialised procedures conducted by the state-affiliated body. He said the total included 2,875 men and 496 women. No details were provided about the remaining four people included in the overall figure.
Masjedi Arani also said that some foreign nationals were among those killed. He named Afghanistan, Syria, Pakistan, China, Iraq and Lebanon as the countries of origin of some of the victims, but did not specify how many foreigners were included in the death toll.
According to IRIB, the identification work was completed using advanced forensic methods.
Conflict timeline outlined in report
The United States and Israel began a joint offensive against Iran on February 28. The attacks killed dozens of senior military officials, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Earlier this week, Pakistan mediated a two-week ceasefire.
Tehran responded with drone and missile attacks aimed at Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq and Gulf countries hosting US military assets. It also said Iran restricted the movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, which it described as a vital route for global oil and gas shipments.
Talks in Islamabad end without agreement
The United States and Iran also held talks in Islamabad on Saturday, but the discussions concluded without a deal.
The latest figures from Iran’s Legal Medicine Organisation provide an official accounting from Iranian authorities of those identified after the strikes over the period from late February to early April.
