Sindh government plans to cap wedding guests and enforce one-dish rule in Karachi

KARACHI: The Sindh government is moving forward with a plan to curb extravagant wedding celebrations in the province, with particular focus on Karachi. This initiative is part of a broader set of austerity measures currently being rolled out across Pakistan.

According to an official notification from the provincial government, the number of guests permitted at marriage functions and parties will be restricted to 200 individuals. Additionally, only a single dish will be allowed to be served at such events.

Well-placed sources have indicated that the government is in the process of developing a mechanism to monitor compliance at marriage halls, banquets, and lawns, especially as Karachi prepares for the upcoming wedding season following Eid.

A senior government official stated that these restrictions are intended to provide direct financial relief to families facing economic challenges. The official added that limiting the number of guests and enforcing the one-dish rule would not only help families save money but also contribute to reducing fuel consumption, a significant consideration amid the current fuel crisis attributed to the ongoing US-Israel and Iran conflict.

The notification specifically states: “the number of guests allowed at marriage functions and parties shall be limited to 200 persons. Only a single dish shall be served where convened.”

The government is expected to finalize the monitoring mechanism soon, ensuring that wedding venues across Karachi adhere to the new regulations as the peak wedding season approaches.
