Major roads closed and strict security enforced in Karachi for Youm-i-Ali procession

KARACHI: Strict security measures were implemented across Karachi on Wednesday as the city observed Youm-i-Ali, marking the martyrdom day of Hazrat Ali. The main procession commenced from Nishtar Park, with several key routes, including M.A. Jinnah Road, closed to vehicular traffic to facilitate the event and ensure public safety.

According to a press release from the Karachi Traffic Police (KTP), the main Youm-i-Ali procession was scheduled to conclude at Imambargah Hussainia Iranian in Kharadar after following its designated route. The KTP stated, “Due to security reasons, M.A. Jinnah Road from Gurumandir to Tower and from Saddar Dawakhana, Empress Market to Regal Chowk will remain closed.”

In an update provided at 11:34am, the KTP confirmed that both sides of M.A. Jinnah Road between Numaish and Tower were shut for traffic as the procession advanced. Additionally, all turns and roads leading from Empress Market towards Regal Chowk were also closed to traffic.

The press release further outlined alternative routes for citizens. In District Central, individuals traveling from Nazimabad were directed to use alternative paths to reach their destinations, as several main arteries remained inaccessible due to the procession. The traffic police urged the public to cooperate with authorities and follow the provided instructions to avoid inconvenience.

Youm-i-Ali is observed annually to commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Ali, and large processions are a traditional part of the observance in Karachi and other parts of the country. The authorities have historically implemented heightened security arrangements during such events to maintain peace and order.
