Iran stands isolated as missile strikes widen conflict and disrupt global oil supply

Iran is facing increasing isolation following the assassination of its supreme leader and sustained pressure on its military from the United States. Despite longstanding partnerships, both Russia and China have limited their responses to diplomatic condemnations and expressions of concern, offering no direct support to Tehran.

In response to attacks from the US and Israel, Iran has expanded the conflict beyond the Middle East. Reports indicate that Iranian missile and drone strikes have reached as far as Cyprus, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Gulf states. These actions have targeted critical businesses, energy infrastructure, and US military bases, bringing the conflict to the doorstep of several regional countries.

The strikes have had a significant impact on global energy markets. Oil facilities, refineries, and key supply routes have been hit, causing severe disruptions. The flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz, which accounts for 20 percent of the world’s oil supply, has been paralysed. This has led to heightened concerns in major capitals, including Washington and Beijing, and has been reflected in rising petrol prices in various countries.
