Sindh Government Launches Probe into Rs20bn Worker Welfare Projects

The Sindh government has initiated a comprehensive investigation into projects valued at Rs20 billion that were launched by the previous administration of the Sindh Workers Welfare Board (SWWB). The decision comes after concerns were raised that these initiatives may have been contrary to the interests of both workers and the institution.

Sources familiar with the matter stated that the new governing body of the SWWB has decided to withdraw several controversial decisions made by its predecessors. Among the projects under scrutiny is a Rs3 billion e-bike scheme intended for industrial workers. Additionally, there are allegations regarding the misuse of Rs6 billion in funds that were designated for workers.

The investigation will also cover the construction and rehabilitation of labour colonies, flats, and other housing schemes managed by the SWWB. The Board has faced several high-profile scandals in recent years. One such case involves a Rs5 billion tender scam, in which officials are alleged to have manipulated procurement processes related to development works.

In response to these issues, the new SWWB governing body has not only withdrawn the disputed decisions but has also taken steps to improve worker welfare. The grant for the heirs of workers who died during service has been increased to Rs1 million.

Officials have stated that the probe aims to ensure transparency and accountability in the management of worker welfare funds and projects. The outcome of the investigation is expected to determine the future course of action regarding the schemes launched by the previous SWWB management.
