A series of small earthquakes near a secretive U.S. military facility in Nevada has fueled speculation about possible nuclear-related activity, though no official confirmation has been provided.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), about 16 tremors with magnitudes between 1.0 and 3.0 were detected close to a restricted military site sometimes referred to as Area 52.
The installation lies near the well-known Area 51, a location often associated with long-standing conspiracy theories involving extraterrestrial research and secret military experiments.
Reporting by the Daily Mail indicates that researchers identified more than 100 seismic events within a 50-mile radius of the Tonopah Test Range, a facility historically used by the U.S. military for weapons testing and experimental programs, including nuclear-related research.
Despite the unusual activity, experts note that underground nuclear detonations usually generate significantly stronger seismic signals. According to the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, such tests typically produce earthquakes ranging from magnitude 4.0 to above 6.0, depending on the weapon’s power and the depth at which it is buried.
The tremors have drawn attention at a time of heightened tensions, as the United States continues a large-scale bombing campaign against Iran under Operation Epic Fury. President Donald Trump has warned that an even larger wave of strikes could still occur.
The developments also come after the expiration of the New START agreement between the United States and Russia, a treaty that previously limited the number of deployed nuclear warheads held by the two countries.
