Zverev leads French Open final four as Italian semi-final makes history

PARIS: Alexander Zverev will head into Friday’s French Open semi-finals as the leading contender for the title after the early exits of Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic left the draw wide open.

The second seed faces Czech youngster Jakub Mensik in the last four, with the winner set to meet either Flavio Cobolli or Matteo Arnaldi in the final. AFP’s tournament preview said Zverev, still chasing his first Grand Slam crown after three defeats in major finals, has reached the semi-finals in commanding fashion, losing only one set so far.

The 29-year-old German, an Olympic champion in 2020, needed less than two-and-a-half hours to beat Spanish teenager Rafael Jodar in the quarter-finals. Despite now being the oldest, highest-ranked and most decorated player left in the men’s draw, Zverev said he was not focused on outside expectations.
