Lahore police successfully prevented an attempt by activists of Majlis Wahdatul Muslimeen (MWM) to enter the US Consulate during a protest on Sunday. Hundreds of MWM supporters gathered outside the consulate earlier than their scheduled protest time, catching security personnel by surprise at around 11am.
The activists were protesting against the US-Israel attack on Iran. During the demonstration, some protesters attempted to force their way into the consulate premises. A few police officers who were on routine duty at the location managed to push back the crowd and prevent them from breaching the building.
Some protesters revealed that one of their colleagues managed to scale the boundary wall of the consulate. Security guards detained the individual until police reinforcements arrived. A police inspector then communicated with consulate security staff and secured the release of the detained protester.
The protest was originally planned for 3pm, but participants began assembling much earlier than scheduled. In response to the situation, the Punjab government imposed Section 144 across the province, banning assemblies, gatherings, processions, sit-ins of four or more people, and the display of arms. This order will remain in effect for seven days unless modified or withdrawn earlier, officials said.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure the safety and security of diplomatic missions and public order in Lahore.
