DUBAI: A Pakistani national was killed in Abu Dhabi after being hit by missile fragments during Iranian strikes on the United Arab Emirates, diplomatic officials confirmed on Saturday.
Officials said they were in contact with UAE authorities regarding the incident. The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed.
The development comes amid escalating hostilities in the Middle East after Israel and the United States carried out strikes on Iran earlier in the day. Tehran responded with missile attacks targeting Gulf states and Israel.
State media in the UAE reported that one person had been killed in Abu Dhabi but did not release further details. Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE and Jordan said they intercepted Iranian missiles in their airspace.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said missile strikes had targeted US bases and Israeli-linked sites in the region and indicated that operations would continue.
In Bahrain, authorities confirmed an attack within its territory and said a service centre of the US Fifth Fleet had been struck. Video footage showed smoke rising near the coast as sirens sounded.
Witnesses in Abu Dhabi reported loud explosions across the city, including in the Corniche, Al Dhafra and Bateen areas. Residents received phone alerts advising them to seek shelter in secure buildings and stay away from windows due to missile threats. Fighter jets were seen flying over Yas Island.
In Qatar, the military said it intercepted incoming Iranian missiles before they reached Qatari territory. Multiple blasts were heard in Doha, and authorities later issued shelter-in-place alerts to residents.
The Kuwaiti army said it engaged missiles in Kuwaiti airspace, while Jordan confirmed that it had shot down two Iranian ballistic missiles.
The Pakistani embassy in the UAE advised nationals to remain calm and rely only on official sources for information. It urged citizens to minimise non-essential travel, check flight schedules with airlines and stay in contact with Pakistani missions.
Global airlines suspended flights across parts of the Middle East, and flight tracking data showed airspace over Iran largely empty following the escalation.
