ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has formally completed a dual nationality arrangement with Germany, allowing Pakistanis residing there to hold citizenship of both countries.
According to an official public notice issued by the Embassy of Pakistan in Berlin, all legal and procedural requirements for the agreement have been finalised. With this development, Germany has been added to the list of countries with which Pakistan permits dual citizenship.
As a result, Pakistan-origin residents of Germany who apply for German nationality will no longer be required to renounce their Pakistani citizenship. This represents a major shift from previous rules, under which acquiring German citizenship meant giving up Pakistani nationality.
The embassy further stated that additional details regarding the process of reclaiming Pakistani citizenship will be shared separately. This will apply to individuals of Pakistani origin who had earlier renounced their nationality in order to obtain German citizenship.
The announcement was issued to formally inform Pakistani nationals and the wider community in Germany about the policy change.
Pakistan already allows dual nationality with several countries under specific legal frameworks. The inclusion of Germany significantly expands these arrangements and directly impacts a large Pakistani diaspora living there.
