Punjab plans change to Matric exam schedule

LAHORE: Matric exams in Punjab could be held after Ramadan next year, as the provincial education authorities are reviewing a proposal to shift the exam schedule. This suggestion comes after concerns were raised about the difficulties faced by nearly 2.5 million students across the province in preparing for exams during the fasting month of Ramadan.

Officials from the Higher Education Department have started examining the recommendation put forward by the provincial education minister. Earlier, the department had announced that Matric exams would begin on March 3, 2026, with intermediate exams set to start on May 5.

Eid-ul-Fitr is expected to fall on March 19 or 20, 2026, with Ramadan beginning on February 18, 2026. The proposed shift in the exam schedule to after Eid would avoid a clash with the holy month, allowing students to focus better on both their religious duties and exam preparation without added pressure.

In Lahore alone, over 300,000 students sit for the Matric exams each year. Teachers have pointed out that maintaining a study routine during fasting hours is challenging for many students. They believe that holding exams after Ramadan would offer students a fair opportunity to revise properly and balance their exam preparation with their religious obligations.
