LAHORE: Interpol has formally closed the case concerning Pakistan’s request for a Red Notice against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Moonis Elahi, ending a nearly two-year-long investigation.
Officials confirmed that following a detailed review, the international policing body disposed of the matter, noting insufficient evidence to pursue the allegations against Elahi. Pakistan had approached Interpol seeking the Red Notice to secure his arrest abroad in connection with complaints of murder, corruption, money laundering, fraud, bribery, and misuse of authority.
Sources stated that Interpol gave both Pakistan and Moonis Elahi the opportunity to present their positions. Elahi also submitted his stance directly before the organisation. The Secretary General of Interpol issued a formal letter certifying that Elahi is not subject to any Red Notice or international alert.
According to sources, this decision means Moonis Elahi cannot be detained at any foreign airport. The PTI leader, 49, has been residing abroad—first in London and since September 2023 in Barcelona—and his movements will no longer trigger Interpol action based on Pakistan’s prior requests.
A credible source at Interpol confirmed to Geo News that Elahi is not listed in its system under any form of international alert. The long-running investigation was closed after determining that the allegations lacked sufficient evidence.
The closure provides relief for Elahi, who has been living in exile for the past three years. His lawyer welcomed the decision, stating it confirmed that the allegations against Elahi were politically motivated and unfounded. He added that Elahi’s resolve to continue supporting former Prime Minister Imran Khan remains firm and called for an apology from Pakistani authorities for pursuing baseless cases against him.
The closure of the case follows repeated requests from Pakistani authorities to Interpol since early 2023, with the Federal Investigation Agency, National Accountability Bureau, Anti-Corruption Establishment, and Punjab Police all seeking his arrest and extradition. Courts had been briefed multiple times over the past two years about the pending Red Notice request.
Interpol’s decision effectively clears Moonis Elahi of all claims raised in the international policing system and ends the legal uncertainty that had constrained his travel and activities abroad.
