China urges restraint, backs lasting truce between Pakistan and Afghanistan

  • Beijing offers to play a ‘constructive role’ in easing tensions after deadly cross-border clashes

BEIJING: China on Thursday urged both Pakistan and Afghanistan to exercise restraint and work toward a “full and lasting ceasefire,” following the two neighbours’ agreement to a 48-hour truce after days of intense border clashes.

“China supports countries in exercising restraint and realising a full and lasting ceasefire,” Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian said at a regular press briefing in Beijing. “We stand ready to continue to play a constructive role for the sustained improvement of relations between the two countries.”

The remarks came after Pakistan and Afghanistan engaged in cross-border hostilities earlier this week, which included ground fighting and airstrikes by Pakistan against what it described as militant positions across the border. The clashes reportedly left dozens dead and hundreds injured before both sides agreed to a temporary ceasefire on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, addressing his federal cabinet in Islamabad, said Pakistan had “retaliated” after losing patience over continued militant attacks originating from Afghan territory. “If they want to talk on our valid conditions and resolve issues through dialogue, we are ready,” the premier said. “But if this ceasefire is only to buy time, we will not accept it.”

There was no immediate response from Kabul to the prime minister’s remarks. However, Afghan Defence Ministry Spokesperson Enayatullah Khowarazmi said the ceasefire was “holding so far.”

The latest flare-up marks the most serious escalation between the two countries since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. China, a close partner of both Islamabad and Kabul, has repeatedly called for peaceful engagement and stability in the region, citing its importance for regional connectivity and economic cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.
