ISLAMABAD: The Punjab government has completed the feasibility study for the Islamabad–Murree monorail project, with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz pushing for its swift implementation. The 40-kilometer route is designed to connect Islamabad with Murree, featuring a significant portion as an elevated line. Initially, the plan was to begin the first phase from near Lake View Park to Pindi Point in Murree.
However, recent discussions have focused on extending the route to Islamabad International Airport, aiming to provide more convenient access for travelers and tourists. Officials have confirmed that the feasibility process is complete, and preparations for the procurement phase are underway. The Punjab chief minister is personally overseeing the project’s progress and has instructed relevant departments to accelerate its launch.
The monorail route is expected to pass near the old Murree Road, with experts stating that the terrain is suitable for the system. The government anticipates the project will be completed within two years after construction begins. A recent meeting between the Punjab government and the Capital Development Authority (CDA) explored alignment options for the airport connection, including using the right of way along Srinagar Highway. The CDA also proposed potential linkages with existing rail infrastructure at Margalla and Rawat railway stations. Both authorities have agreed to conduct a pre-feasibility study for the airport-to-Lake View section before finalizing the alignment.
