AI enters the world of cricket with pitch reporting

Artificial intelligence (AI) has officially entered the world of cricket, with the International Cricket Council (ICC) integrating AI technology into pitch reporting.

Before the tenth match of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, former Indian captain Mithali Raj introduced a new way to analyze the pitch using Google’s Gemini AI tool.

In the segment, Mithali employed the Gemini Live feature on her phone to inspect the pitch at the Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam. She asked the AI, “We’re at the ACA-VDCA Stadium for a one-day match. The weather is hot and humid — what do you think about this pitch?”

Gemini’s response highlighted that the pitch appeared smooth and batter-friendly, with minimal grass cover. It also noted that the warm and humid conditions would limit ball swing, potentially leading to a high-scoring game.

Mithali agreed with Gemini’s assessment, confirming that it was indeed a good pitch for batting, suggesting a match full of runs could be expected.

This match, featuring India and South Africa, marked the tenth fixture of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025.
