KARACHI: A 19-year-old woman from Lyari, Karachi, has passed away after reportedly enduring severe physical abuse at the hands of her husband. The incident occurred just days after her marriage, and despite receiving treatment at the Civil Hospital’s Trauma Centre, she succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday.
The victim, identified as Shanti, had been married to Ashok, a resident of the same area, for barely two weeks before the abuse began. Her brother, Saiyon, filed a police report on July 5, describing how his sister had been repeatedly assaulted by her husband. Following the registration of the First Information Report (FIR), Ashok was arrested and remains in custody while the investigation continues.
Shanti had tied the knot with Ashok on June 16, but within days of the marriage, she began experiencing violent treatment. According to the FIR, the abuse started immediately, with Shanti being physically assaulted on June 17 and 18. She returned to her family home on June 30, in a deteriorated state, and confided in her brother about the abuse she had endured. She revealed that Ashok had bitten her multiple times and had threatened to kill her if she told anyone.
As her condition worsened, Shanti’s in-laws initially sought treatment for her at a private hospital. However, when her condition did not improve, they brought her back to her family. On July 4, her brother took her to the Civil Hospital’s Trauma Centre, where she was treated until her death.
Police officials confirmed that Ashok was promptly arrested after the complaint was filed, and investigations into the case are ongoing.
