Second monsoon spell weakens impact on Hyderabad, Larkana faces heavy downpour

HYDERABAD: The second monsoon spell of the season, which began early on Sunday, brought light rain to Hyderabad, partially flooding some low-lying areas and roads. Power outages followed, affecting several areas until afternoon.

According to the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO), by 9:45 AM, power supply was restored to 97 electricity feeders, but 55 feeders remained shut due to tripping. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) recorded 21mm of rainfall in the city, though local authorities reported higher rainfall amounts.

Meanwhile, Larkana was hit by a more intense downpour, with the PMD recording up to 86mm of rain by 5:30 PM. Several areas, including Syed Qaim Shah Bukhari, Market, Civil Hospital, SP Chowk, and Bhains Colony, were inundated with ankle to knee-deep water. Motorists and pedestrians had to wade through floodwaters, and ambulances faced difficulty reaching the Civil Hospital.

Residents of Larkana complained about the lack of maintenance in the city’s drainage network, which had not been desilted, leading to flooding with sewage-mixed rainwater.

Other districts such as Sukkur, Khairpur, Noushehro Feroze, Jacobabad, Mirpurkhas, Badin, Benazirabad, and Tharparkar also received rainfall. The PMD recorded up to 20mm in Sukkur and Noushehro Feroze, and 17mm in Khairpur and Jacobabad.
