CDC, commissioner reaffirm commitment to polio eradication efforts

KARACHI: A delegation from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Polio Branch met with Commissioner Karachi Syed Hasan Naqvi to discuss ongoing efforts toward polio eradication in the city. Led by Dr. Richard Franka, the delegation emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum in the fight against polio, with continued CDC technical assistance and the strengthening of health department staff.

The delegation highlighted Karachi’s role as a core polio reservoir due to its large, diverse population and continuous migration, presenting challenges for eradication efforts. Both sides stressed the need for high-quality surveillance and vaccination coverage to effectively interrupt transmission.

The role of deputy commissioners across Karachi in supporting polio campaigns and their leadership in coordinating efforts on the ground was also acknowledged. Commissioner Naqvi underscored the importance of maintaining NSTOP support in key districts and enhancing the capacity of frontline workers. He proposed organizing appreciation events for these workers to recognize their dedication and ensure continued motivation.

As a gesture of thanks, the CDC delegation was presented with souvenirs in recognition of their ongoing support in the fight against polio.
