Universities given one month to verify faculty degrees through HEC

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Sindh Assembly has directed universities, including Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SMBBMU) Larkana, to verify the degrees of all faculty and staff through the Higher Education Commission (HEC) within one month to prevent the recruitment of individuals with fake degrees.

The PAC met on Monday to review audit reports from SMBBMU Larkana for fiscal years 2017 and 2018, and Dawood University of Engineering and Technology. The Director General Audit Sindh raised concerns about appointments made at SMBBMU without HEC verification. Dr. Nusrat Shah, the Vice Chancellor of SMBBMU, clarified that while MBBS and BDS degrees were verified through the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), HEC verification was also conducted when necessary. She noted that one employee’s degree could not be verified, leading to their termination.

PAC Chairman Nisar Khuhro emphasized that all universities must submit a report after completing the verification process, and any unverified degrees would result in the termination of employees. The committee made it clear that recruitment based on fake degrees would not be tolerated.
