ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday described Pakistan’s relationship with the United States as a true and special one, saying the two countries had worked together for nearly eight decades across security, counterterrorism, energy and science.
Speaking at an event held to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States, the prime minister said Islamabad and Washington had cooperated during major moments in their shared history, including the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in the 1980s and the global war on terror from 2001 to 2021.
Referring to last year’s tensions with India after the Pahalgam incident, Shehbaz said US President Donald Trump had played a decisive role in securing a ceasefire between Pakistan and India on May 10 following four days of conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. He said Pakistan would remain grateful to Trump for helping restore peace in South Asia and save millions of people.
The prime minister also said Trump merited recognition for his role in the ceasefire effort. He made the remarks while addressing the anniversary event for the United States.
