IRSA to assess water availability for Kharif crops on May 5

ISLAMABAD: The Indus River System Authority will convene its advisory committee on May 5 to evaluate national water availability for Kharif season and review the implementation of decisions from its March 26 meeting. The session gains added urgency following India’s April 23 move to unilaterally suspend the Indus Waters Treaty.

As of May 1, Tarbela recorded inflows of 63,000 cusecs and outflows of 52,100 cusecs, while Mangla saw inflows of 48,700 cusecs and outflows of 32,000 cusecs. Kabul River at Nowshera had both inflows and outflows at 35,100 cusecs.

Jinnah Barrage recorded 91,100 cusecs inflow and 84,600 cusecs outflow, Chashma Barrage had 76,500 cusecs inflow and 76,000 cusecs outflow, and Taunsa Barrage saw 56,800 cusecs inflow and 47,900 cusecs outflow. Guddu, Sukkur, Kotri, Trimmu, and Panjnad barrages also reported respective flow data, with Sukkur having a notably low outflow of 9,800 cusecs.

Tarbela Dam’s water level stood at 1,432.04 feet with 0.560 MAF usable storage; Mangla at 1,132.70 feet with 1.095 MAF; and Chashma at 643.80 feet with 0.107 MAF. Flow data for major rivers was compiled based on 24-hour averages and 6:00 am readings at specific points.
