Degrees conferred on 6,000 students at 8th UoG convocation

GUJRAT: As many as 6,000 graduates from the sessions 2019 and 2020 were awarded degrees on the 8th convocation of the University of Gujrat (UoG) held here at Hafiz Hayat Campus on Thursday with Governor Punjab / Chancellor Eng Muhammad Baligh ur Rehman chairing the ceremony and conferring gold medals on 151 toppers from among the graduates from different departments.

The governor expressed his satisfaction over the progress made by the university under the visionary leadership of Prof. Dr Muhammad Mushahid Anwar after taking over the office of vice chancellor a few months ago.

“Universities are primarily tasked with fashioning a culture of research and innovation. Apart from imparting knowledge, they must focus on character building of the youth,” said the governor.

He called upon the youth to have a meaningful goal or purpose of their endeavours in life and to always think positively.

He said that a country cannot make any progress without investing in education.

He warned the youth not to let their minds get corrupted by the social media false campaigns. He advised them to investigate and verify any piece of information and not to believe everything without first confirming it.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Muhammad Mushahid Anwar said that the UoG ranks 23rd among the national universities and 9th among those in the province.

He revealed that a Rs200 million Industrial Park project in collaboration with the Gujrat Chamber of Commerce & Industries is currently underway. The university is also working on a Rs150 million solar energy project for the academic blocks in a bid to overcome electricity crisis.

He said that 70 percent of the  Rs4.6 billion budget for the fiscal year 2023-24 was arranged by the varsity’s own resources.

Among the guests of honour at the convocation ceremony were former parlimentarian Haji Nasir Mehmood, Haji Zafar Rehmani, Malik Hanif Awan, Nawabzada Tahir Ul Mulk, Maj (retd) Moin Nawaz Waraich and others.

Registrar Muhammad Naeem Butt and Controller of Examinations Tanzila Qamar assisted the governor in the gold medal distribution ceremony.
