PBS data shows population exceeding 240mn

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) has announced that the field operations for the 7th Population and Housing Census will not be extended beyond Monday.

This decision, made during a meeting of the Census Monitoring Committee, is due to the census’s connection with the delimitation process for the upcoming general elections.

The PBS conveyed this information to the provincial census commissioners and the chief commissioner of Islamabad through a letter.

According to the latest available data, Pakistan’s population, excluding Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, was recorded at 240,602,348 as of May 12. The census has counted 121,215,805 individuals in Punjab, 56,566,804 in Sindh, 39,651,697 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 20,865,742 in Balochistan, and 2,302,307 in Islamabad.

In an earlier letter dated April 30, Chief Census Commissioner Dr Naeemuz Zafar had extended the field operations for two weeks until May 15 specifically for verification and coverage of the remaining structures and houses in selected districts.
