Gauhar resigns as PM’s adviser on power, petroleum

ISLAMABAD: Tabish Gauhar stepped down from the post of adviser to the prime minister on power and petroleum divisions, about a year after his appointment, he announced Tuesday.

“After a year of public service, I’ve decided to call it a day to return to my family. It’s been the privilege of a lifetime to serve the country, to the best of my abilities, in an honorary capacity,” he tweeted.

“I shall remain indebted to the PM for giving me this opportunity.”

Gauhar said while challenges in the energy sector were manifold, he had “no doubt that under the able leadership of Hammad Azhar, the MoE [Ministry of Energy] team will continue to stay the course on structural reforms”.

Shortly after his resignation, the Cabinet Division issued a notification, announcing that Prime Minister Imran Khan has accepted his resignation with effect from September 20 (Monday).

Who is Tabish Gauhar?

Gauhar was born and raised in Karachi and had then moved to Islamabad when his father landed a job at the World Bank. He did his O-levels from Beaconhouse and his A-levels from Frobel’s International School.

He is an IBA alumnus belonging to the MBA class of 1996 and is an Electrical Engineer from King’s College London as a Chevening Scholar.

Gauhar’s first job was as a systems analyst at Exxon Chemical. He has also worked at Engro Corporation. He is also the founder of Oasis Energy, a management consultancy firm in the power and energy sector that was established in 2016.

Interestingly enough, Oasis Energy’s website and LinkedIn remain unavailable as of late.

He has also worked at troubled Abraaj Group and has served as the chief financial officer at AES Corporation. Moreover, he has also been associated with the Hub Power Project in Pakistan. In 2019, he was appointed as a director at Byco.

He has more than two decades worth of experience in project development in private power, water and petrochemical industries within the MENA region, Europe and Africa.

However, perhaps his most notable role was when he served as the CEO and chairman of K-Electric until 2015.
