Metrobus back on track after three-week hiatus

LAHORE: The Metrobus service resumed operations on Wednesday with a fleet of 60 vehicles after an 11-day hiatus caused by the strike of the drivers and other staffers over non-payment of arrears, bonuses and other benefits by the outgoing contractor.

The protestors ended the strike Tuesday night after a new contractor — VEDA Transit Solutions Private Limited — took the charge from Albayrak Holding, a Turkish company.

They had announced to move the court for getting their issues redressed and demanded the government should not return the security amount to the previous contractor till their demands were met.

Last year, the Punjab government has signed an agreement with VEDA Solutions and a group of banks to replace the existing fleet of buses. Per the agreement, the new contractor will operate the service until 2029.

Launched in 2013, the project facilitates the travel of 150,000 commuters daily within the provincial capital.
