Five killed as passenger van plunges into ditch

ISLAMABAD: At least five passengers, including women and children, were killed when a passenger van plunged into a seasonal ditch in Punjab on Wednesday, police and rescue officials said.

The van carrying 10 passengers was on its way to a village near the Head Jaggu area of Gujrat when the driver lost control of the vehicle which then fell into the roadside ditch, Muhammad Faisal, an official of emergency rescue service Rescue 1122 in Gujrat said.

Five dead bodies have been recovered by the rescue personnel so far, said the official, adding that the rest of those onboard were rescued, and have been shifted to a nearby hospital for medical assistance.

Police said the accident happened due to the negligence of the driver as he was driving fast despite heavy rains.
