Imran alleges mega corruption in Rawalpindi metro project

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan on Monday lashed out at Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif, claiming that large-scale corruption was revealed in the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro Bus Project.

Taking to his Twitter handle, Imran Khan stated, “Mega corruption and mismanagement pointed out by audit in the Rawalpindi Islamabad Metro. Most cases forcibly suppressed by special departmental committee despite objections from the audit. So much for ‘good governance’ in Punjab”.

He followed the tweet with another statement and ridiculed Punjab CM’s claim of transparency in the project saying, “And so much for Shahbaz Sharif’s claim that there will not be even one rupee corruption in Punjab! Punjab mired in mega corruption whichever govt project is audited”.

On numerous occasions, the PTI chairman has criticised the ruling party over the alleged corruption in metro bus projects. Earlier this month, Imran tweeted that the Sharif family made itself rich through kickbacks received from the Multan Metro Bus and other such projects, adding that it was never aimed for the betterment of people. He called the metro bus “a white elephant”, and stressed that there were “hardly any buses & even fewer passengers”.

“The project will need major subsidies to survive. Clear the project was for kickbacks going into offshore accounts not for people,” he tweeted.

The PTI chief had claimed that an investigation into the Islamabad-Rawalpindi metro project and the Lahore Orange Line project would reveal that the Shehbaz Sharif earned massive kickbacks and it was the reason for “building these loss-making megaprojects”.

He shared a report claiming Rs 5 billion loss to the national exchequer, stating ““any probe into the Metros and Orange Train will reveal that the real reason for building these loss-making mega projects has always been massive kickbacks”.

On the other hand, Punjab CM Shehbaz Sharif and the provincial government refute all allegations of corruption levelled by the PTI.
