Nearly 28% of Americans confess to having ‘intimate or romantic’ connections with AI

A recent study has revealed that nearly 28% of Americans acknowledge having an “intimate or romantic” relationship with AI chatbots. The study, conducted by Vantage Point Counselling Services, found that at least 54% of participants viewed AI as a colleague, friend, or even a family member.

While many participants classified their interactions with AI as platonic, some described the relationship as a personal trainer, therapist, sibling, or even a parent.

The study also identified over 30 AI platforms with which users claimed to have formed relationships. GPT emerged as the most popular, followed by Apple’s Siri and Google’s Gemini, which were also ranked among the top five.

The increase in AI relationships coincides with findings from the Institute of Family Studies, which suggested a decline in traditional human relationships in the U.S. In one notable case, a man proposed to his AI “girlfriend” after a 100,000-word conversation, despite having a partner and child.

The study also indicated that 37.55% of participants were not currently seeking a human relationship or had recently faced challenges in finding one. Meanwhile, 33.69% admitted to either cheating on their partner or engaging in casual dating, and 19.30% were not in a romantic human relationship but were actively seeking one.
