Exciting update on the sequel of ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’

The wildly popular Netflix animated film K-Pop Demon Hunters is set to return with a sequel, confirmed by both Netflix and Sony. The follow-up to the smash hit, which became a global sensation since its release, will hit screens in 2029, according to reports from Deadline.

The film’s creators, director Maggie Kang and co-director Chris Appelhans, will also return for the second installment. Discussions for the animated sequel began just days after the original movie premiered on August 23, and its success quickly catapulted it to become one of the most-watched films in Netflix history.

The plot of K-Pop Demon Hunters follows a group of internationally famous K-pop idols who moonlight as demon hunters, blending high-energy music with supernatural action. The film’s unique mix of vibrant animation and thrilling storytelling made it an instant hit, with sing-along screenings in cinemas grossing around $20 million in just one weekend.

As for a live-action adaptation of the film, creator Maggie Kang has made it clear that she isn’t a fan of the idea. “There’s so many elements of the tone and the comedy that are so suited for animation,” she explained to the BBC. “It would feel too grounded in live action. So totally it wouldn’t work for me.”

Co-director Chris Appelhans echoed these thoughts, emphasizing the freedom animation allows for creating extraordinary and larger-than-life scenes. “Animation is where you can push the limits of what’s possible—things like a goofy comedian who’s also a singer and a back-kick artist, all while freefalling through the sky,” he said.

With a growing fanbase and anticipation building for the sequel, it seems K-Pop Demon Hunters will continue to be a beloved franchise for years to come.
