Earth has two moons? Here’s what NASA has to say

A recent announcement by the Natioenal Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has sparked global fascination, revealing that Earth has been accompanied by a second “moon” for decades.

Scientists confirmed that this cosmic companion, though appearing to follow our planet like a twin, is actually an asteroid known as 2025 PN7 — classified as a “quasi moon.”

Discovered by the University of Hawaii in 2025, the asteroid is not a true moon but a small space rock that orbits the sun in near-perfect harmony with Earth. This synchronized movement makes it seem as though the object is shadowing our planet through space.

Measuring between 18 and 36 meters wide, 2025 PN7 travels at a distance of around 4 million kilometers from Earth — about ten times farther than the Moon. Despite its proximity, NASA confirmed that it poses no threat and has no influence on Earth’s tides or gravity.

According to NASA, the asteroid has been in this synchronized orbit since the 1960s and is expected to remain part of Earth’s gravitational neighborhood until approximately 2083 before gradually drifting away.

While this “second moon” doesn’t impact the planet, researchers say its discovery provides valuable insight into near-Earth asteroids and the intricate gravitational forces that shape our solar system.
