NEW DELHI: Jailed activist Sonam Wangchuk’s wife Gitanjali J. Angmo has approached the Indian Supreme Court with a habeas corpus petition against the noted environmentalist’s detention
Gitanjali Angmo posted on X: “It is one week today. I still have no information about Sonam Wangchuk’s health, his condition, or the grounds for her detention.”
The plea was filed through advocate Sarvam Ritam Khare. It is not clear when the plea will be heard as the court is on vacation for Dussehra.
Angmo had on October 1 written to President Droupadi Murmu demanding Wangchuk’s unconditional release. In the letter, she decried her husband’s “illegal detention” and the “witch-hunt” she said he has been subjected to over the last four years.
“I am completely unaware about my husband’s condition. I was also told the officer would explain to me my legal rights. Even that has not been done till today. I am shocked and devastated,” she wrote.
Wangchuk was detained from Leh in Ladakh on September 26 under the National Security Act, and is understood to be jailed in Jodhpur, Rajasthan – over 1,500 kilometres from Leh.
