Meta can now read your AI chats for targeted ads

Meta has updated its privacy policy to include the use of conversations with its generative AI tools for personalizing ads and content across its platforms. This change, effective December 16, will apply to users on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, and is expected to bolster Meta’s ad revenue.

Under the new policy, any interaction with Meta’s AI, whether through text or voice, can be used to enhance content recommendations. For example, if a user discusses hiking with Meta AI, they may later see hiking-related posts, groups, or ads for gear.

There will be no option to opt out of this data use, although users can adjust their ad and content preferences. Meta has clarified that certain sensitive topics, such as religious beliefs, sexual orientation, and political views, will not be used for ad targeting. However, conversations outside of these topics will be included in the data collection.

Meta has over one billion monthly interactions with its AI, meaning the policy change could impact a significant portion of the global population.
