In a bizarre turn of events, French President Emmanuel Macron found himself stuck in traffic in New York as his convoy was blocked by the motorcade of US President Donald Trump. The situation arose as Macron was on his way to the French embassy, and New York police informed him that the road was closed due to Trump’s motorcade passing through.
Upon learning of the roadblock, Macron made a phone call to Trump, explaining the situation. In a rather unexpected response, Trump remarked that he was on the road and everything was closed for Macron. Despite the inconvenience, Macron decided to continue on foot, much to the delight of the public, who took the opportunity to snap selfies with the French leader.
The unusual interaction occurred during a time when global tensions were heightened over the recognition of Palestine as a state, a move that several countries, including Britain and Portugal, were expected to support in the lead-up to the United Nations General Assembly.
During the same week, President Trump also made headlines for his speech at the UN, in which he sharply criticized London Mayor Sadiq Khan, accusing him of attempting to implement Islamic laws in London. This statement sparked controversy and drew attention during a week focused on international relations and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with discussions on the two-state solution taking center stage at the UN.
