WASHINGTON: Amid rising tensions between Pakistan and India, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has called for both countries to exercise restraint and seek a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict. In a statement released on May 8, 2025, an IMF spokesperson expressed hope that the situation would de-escalate and that tensions between the two nations would subside.
The IMF also confirmed that its Executive Board will meet on May 9 to review Pakistan’s funding request, which includes an assessment of progress under Pakistan’s ongoing economic reform program. The statement highlighted the IMF’s continued support for Pakistan’s economic efforts, underscoring the organization’s commitment to assisting Pakistan in stabilizing and strengthening its economy.
The conflict between India and Pakistan escalated after India blamed Pakistan for alleged involvement in the Pahalgam attack. On May 6, India launched missile strikes on six cities in Pakistan, resulting in the deaths of 31 civilians and injuries to over 50. In retaliation, Pakistan’s military shot down five Indian jets and inflicted heavy losses on the Indian Army at the Line of Control (LoC).
Pakistan’s Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR), Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, condemned India’s actions, calling them “cowardly and disgraceful” and vowing that “every drop of innocent blood will be accounted for.” The DG ISPR reiterated Pakistan’s stance that it would not tolerate any acts of aggression.
