China administers over 2.22 bn doses of Covid vaccines

In a bid to help secure people from Covid-19 pandemic, countries around the world have till date administered 6.48 billion doses upon the people in across the globe.

China leads the race for vaccinating its people while the United States of America lags far behind. China has administered over 2.22 billion doses of Covid-19 vaccine on its citizens in mainland China as of Saturday. According to China’s National Health Commission, China is about to complete vaccination of its population.

US administers nearly 402m vaccine doses

on the contrary, the United States has administered 401,819,240 doses of Covid-19 vaccines in the country as of Saturday morning and distributed 487,277,035 doses, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

Those figures are up from the 400,669,422 vaccine doses the CDC said had been administered by Friday out of 485,713,525 doses delivered.

Independent advisers to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will meet later this month to make recommendations on booster doses of Moderna Inc and Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 vaccines, the agency said on Friday.

The meetings, on October 20-21, are scheduled a week after advisers to the US Food and Drug Administration weigh in on the need for booster doses of the two vaccines.

The United States will accept the use by international visitors of Covid-19 vaccines authorized by US regulators or the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said late on Friday.

On September 20, the White House announced the United States in November would lift travel restrictions on air travelers from 33 countries including China, India, Brazil and most of Europe who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19. It did not specify then which vaccines would be accepted.

Pakistan administers 89.7m vaccine doses

Pakistan has administered 89.7 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines in across the country as of Sunday. Meanwhile, Punjab recorded 370 Covid cases and 10 more deaths due to the virus during the past 24 hours.

According to provincial health secretary Imran Sikandar Baloch, eight deaths were reported from Lahore during the period.

He said that active cases in Punjab now total 13,739, adding that the tally of the positive cases in the province stood at 435,896.

The official further stated that the total number of deaths due to the virus is currently at the 12,777 mark.

The health secretary said that some 409,380 patients have recovered from the disease so far.

“As many as 19,281 tests were conducted in Punjab in the past 24 hours, totalling 7,556,480 tests,” he added.

The official informed that positivity ratio in the province is currently at 1.9 per cent, adding specific SOPs have been issued for various sectors.

He urged the public to take strict precautions and get vaccinated, terming it the only and effective solution against the virus.

Italy hits target of fully vaccinating 80% of over-12s

Italy reached the target of fully vaccinating 80% of the population over the age of 12 against Covid-19, according to official data, achieving a goal Rome had set as a safety cut-off point, government data showed on Sunday.

According to a government website showed 43,229,551 people over-12, out of a total population of around 60 million, had completed their vaccination cycle as of Oct 10.

Tanzania receives over 1m vaccine doses from China

Tanzania on Friday received 1,065,600 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine from China under COVAX, boosting the east African nation’s vaccination campaign against Covid-19.

Speaking shortly after receiving the vaccines, Minister for Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children Dorothy Gwajima expressed gratitude, saying the donation will help accelerate the campaign launched by President Samia Suluhu Hassan on July 28.
