Chenab water level falls in Chiniot after flood wave passes

Water levels in the Chenab dropped in Chiniot on Sunday after a flood wave moved onward towards Head Trimmu in Jhang district, easing pressure in the area but leaving farmland and homes affected in riverine settlements.

Official data showed discharge at Chiniot Bridge fell from 155,228 cusecs late on Saturday night to 104,139 cusecs by noon on Sunday, pointing to a steady decline in the river's flow.

The recent flooding inundated standing crops across hundreds of acres in Bhawana, Lalian, Sambhal, Kot Amir Shah and other nearby areas. Several houses and other properties were also hit, while floodwater remained in parts of the affected localities, delaying a full assessment of losses.

District authorities said damage to crops, houses, infrastructure and other public and private property would be assessed once the water recedes. The administration continued monitoring the situation and urged residents to avoid unnecessary movement near the Chenab and low-lying areas. Separately, Bahawalpur Division Commissioner Irfan Ali Kathia visited protective embankments near Empress Bridge on the Sutlej to review strengthening and rehabilitation work, where irrigation officials briefed him on flood protection measures.
