Terrorists had ambushed police personnel deployed in Mangi Dam Phase III area of Ziarat on Tuesday, triggering hours-long gun battles that left nine police officers, including two station house officers (SHOs), dead. The attackers also abducted several civilians and police personnel following the assault, prompting the military to launch an extensive counterterrorism campaign across the province.
According to security sources, the joint operation is continuing with sustained air and ground action against the banned outfit. Fitna al-Khawarij is the term used by the state for terrorists belonging to the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
The sources said security forces had recovered a large cache of weapons, ammunition and other equipment from militant hideouts during the operation.
They added that the total number of terrorists killed specifically under the ongoing Operation Shaban had reached 79, while the overall number of militants eliminated in Operation Shaban and other intelligence-based operations across Balochistan since July 5 had risen to 117.
The sources said Operation Shaban would continue until "the last terrorist is eliminated."
Federal interior minister lauds joint action
