KARACHI: A 28-year-old doctor was killed in a shooting during a robbery incident near Teen Talwar, where armed suspects fled with Rs2.5 million, police said on Monday.
South SSP Mahzoor Ali said the victim, identified as Akash, had withdrawn cash from a bank and was travelling with his father and cousin to another bank in a car. He said the family was carrying two packets of cash worth Rs2.5 million each when their vehicle stopped near the bank and suspects approached from behind.
According to the SSP, a security guard at the bank mistook the people inside the car for robbers and opened fire. The suspects also fired during the incident. Police said one of the two cash packets was snatched and the attackers escaped.
Investigators are trying to establish whether the bullet that killed Akash was fired by the bank guard or by one of the suspects, SSP Ali said. Police later shifted the body to the mortuary at Jinnah Hospital. The victim’s family said they would hold a sit-in with the body if those involved were not arrested. Akash’s uncle, Khem Chand, told media that the shooting happened outside the bank and said the doctor had been serving at Jinnah Hospital for the past two years.
Speaking to the media, Chand said:
The firing took place outside the bank and my nephew was killed
