Fery shocks Dimitrov to reach Wimbledon quarter-finals

LONDON: Britain's Arthur Fery produced one of the standout results of the day at Wimbledon on Monday, beating fellow wildcard Grigor Dimitrov in five sets to move into the quarter-finals, while Jasmine Paolini ended Alexandra Eala's run in the women's draw.

Fery came through a tense Centre Court contest 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10/7) against the Bulgarian veteran, buoyed by strong backing from the home crowd. The 23-year-old, who attended school in Wimbledon, was playing on the court for the first time.

After the match, Fery said the occasion meant a great deal to him.

"First time on this court, five sets against an absolute legend of the game. I grew up five minutes from here, coming to watch matches on this court. It's unbelievable", he stated.

Fery will next play ninth seed Flavio Cobolli as he attempts to become only the fifth British man in the Open era to make the Wimbledon semi-finals. Ranked 114th in the world, he is the lowest-ranked man to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals since Nick Kyrgios in 2014 and is set to move into the ATP top 100 for the first time after the tournament. He had also needed five sets in the third round against Zizou Bergs, in what was reported as the longest match of this year's event so far.

For Dimitrov, the defeat brought further disappointment at the last-16 stage. Last year, he was forced to retire hurt from his match against eventual champion Jannik Sinner while leading by two sets at the same point in the tournament.

Cobolli, Fritz and Zverev in focus

Cobolli secured his place in the last eight with a 7-5, 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 victory over Australia's fifth seed Alex de Minaur, making it back-to-back Wimbledon quarter-finals for the Italian. Cobolli lost the French Open final to Alexander Zverev last month and could face the German again in the semi-finals.

Zverev, the French Open champion, was due to play Czech 13th seed Jiri Lehecka later on Centre Court as he sought a first Wimbledon quarter-final on his 10th appearance at the tournament. He might need a quick win to avoid the 2200 GMT curfew forcing him to return on Tuesday. The winner was set to meet Taylor Fritz.

Fritz, last year's semi-finalist, advanced with a 7-6 (7/1), 6-4, 6-4 win over 10th seed Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan on Court One. The sixth seed reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the fourth time in five years.

Paolini ends Eala's run

In the women's draw, Italian 13th seed Jasmine Paolini defeated Alexandra Eala 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 on Centre Court. The result sent Paolini into her first Grand Slam quarter-final since she lost the 2024 Wimbledon final.

Paolini, who had endured a difficult season, will now face Ukraine's 12th seed Marta Kostyuk, who beat qualifier Ashlyn Krueger in straight sets. The Italian had looked close to a first-round exit earlier in the tournament after losing her opening set 6-0 to world number 195 Robin Montgomery.

Reflecting on her progress through the draw, Paolini said "After the first set in the first round I was like 'Okay, it can only go better'.. point by point, game by game, I was feeling better."

Paolini was also the runner-up at the French Open two years ago. Eala, 21, nevertheless completed a landmark campaign, becoming the first player from the Philippines to reach both the third and fourth rounds of a Grand Slam in the Open era.

Elsewhere, Belgian 25th seed Elise Mertens followed up her upset win over second seed Elena Rybakina in the previous round by beating Marie Bouzkova 6-4, 6-4. Mertens advanced to her first Wimbledon quarter-final and will play Czech ninth seed Linda Noskova, who defeated Madison Keys.
