52 contenders seek KU vice chancellor's office

KARACHI: The process to choose the next vice chancellor of the University of Karachi is moving into its interview stage, with the search committee formed for appointments in Sindh’s public universities set to meet shortlisted applicants from July 9.

According to details available from the selection process, interviews for the KU vice chancellor position will be held on July 9, 10, 13 and 14. Call letters have started going out to candidates who made the shortlist.

The university’s current vice chancellor, Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, is due to complete his four-year tenure on July 28. A permanent appointment is not expected to be finalised before that date. In that situation, the existing vice chancellor may be asked to continue in an interim capacity. A number of people from inside and outside the university are interested in holding temporary charge.

A total of 52 people submitted applications for the post, and 46 of them have been shortlisted for interviews. Some influential quarters are backing the idea of placing a bureaucrat in the vice chancellor’s office.
