ISLAMABAD: At least eight people were killed and more than two dozen others injured after powerful windstorms and torrential rains triggered roof and wall collapses, flash floods and other weather-related incidents across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Punjab over the past 24 hours, authorities said on Thursday, as the country entered its first organised monsoon spell of the season.

Torrential rains, accompanied by strong winds, lashed several districts across Punjab and KP on Wednesday after weeks of intense heat, causing roofs and walls of several houses to collapse, according to Rescue 1122.

“So far, six people have died and 19 people have been injured due to roofs and walls of houses collapsing due to heavy rains, wind and flash floods in the province,” the KP Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said.

“The deceased include two men, three children and a woman, while the injured include seven men, a woman and 11 children.”

The PDMA said a total of 38 houses were damaged by heavy rains and flash floods, including two that were completely destroyed. The affected districts included Khyber, Lower Dir, Mardan, Shangla, Bajaur, Lower Chitral and Upper Dir.

In Punjab, two people were killed and nine others injured after walls, roofs and billboards collapsed during rain and windstorms, according to Rescue 1122 spokesperson Farooq Ahmed.

The incidents were reported in Attock, Khushab, Sargodha and Sheikhupura districts during the last 24 hours.

“The seriously injured persons were shifted to nearby hospitals after being given immediate medical aid,” Ahmed said.

Earlier this week, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecast the first organised monsoon spell of the season from July 1 to July 6, warning of heavy rainfall, localised flash floods and urban flooding across large parts of the country following successive years of devastating monsoon disasters.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed the relevant authorities to complete advance preparations for an emergency fund to ensure a timely response to monsoon-related emergencies, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.

Pakistan has witnessed repeated climate-related disasters in recent years. The catastrophic 2022 monsoon floods claimed more than 1,700 lives, affected 33 million people and caused economic losses exceeding $30 billion, making them among the country's worst climate disasters.

Last year's monsoon season also triggered widespread flooding that killed more than 1,000 people and damaged homes, infrastructure and farmland, particularly in Punjab and KP.

Earlier this year, torrential rains that battered several parts of the country in late March and early April pushed the nationwide death toll beyond 80.
