LAHORE: Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan on Wednesday called on Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to discuss the province's political situation, the ongoing budget session and other matters of mutual interest, while praising what he described as her "historic and unparalleled" performance over the past two years and her government's governance and public welfare initiatives.
The Speaker lauded the chief minister’s two-year performance, describing it as “historic and unparalleled”, and commended her initiative to introduce electric bus services at the district and tehsil levels for the first time in Punjab, said a statement issued from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).
The chief minister acknowledged and appreciated the Speaker’s services for the Punjab Assembly, saying his efforts to modernise the assembly and digitise its records were “remarkable”. She also praised his role in ensuring quality legislation and conducting the proceedings of the House with prudence and efficiency.
“Our sole objective is to ensure relief reaches every citizen of Punjab and to take the province to new heights of development,” the chief minister said, adding that the pace of the government’s public service agenda would be accelerated further, the CMO said.
The Punjab Assembly Speaker said the chief minister had, for the first time, ensured citizens’ constitutional right to cleanliness and a better environment through the Suthra Punjab initiative. He added that the international recognition received by the Suthra Punjab and Apni Chhat Apna Ghar programmes was a matter of pride for Punjab.
He said the chief minister’s performance was reflected in tangible results rather than rhetoric, adding that her government had established a model of rapid response and good governance in the province.
The Speaker expressed confidence that the Punjab Assembly’s budget session would reflect the aspirations of the people and prove to be another milestone in the province’s development.
He also described the chief minister’s initiatives for the empowerment of women and youth as historic, saying women in Punjab now felt safer and young people were more hopeful about their future. He added that Ms Sharif remained actively engaged in public service and maintained a visible presence in the field day and night, the statement quoted the speaker as saying.
