PlayStation to end physical game disc production from January 2028
Sony says PlayStation will stop producing physical game discs for consoles from January 2028 as it shifts to digital-only sales for new releases. Previously released or pre-2028 disc titles will not be affected.

ISLAMABAD: Sony has said PlayStation will stop producing physical game discs for its consoles from January 2028, marking a shift to digital-only distribution for new titles.
In a statement posted on the PlayStation Blog on Wednesday, the company said the move reflects changing buying habits and wider industry trends. It said the decision was taken as consumer preferences and the entertainment business continue to move away from discs and toward digital formats.
Sony said games released after the January 2028 cutoff will be sold digitally through the PlayStation Store and retailers, while titles that have already launched — or are due to launch before then in disc format — will not be affected by the change. The company described the move as part of adapting to demand, saying digital media had overtaken physical discs.
According to the statement, Sony also linked the change to how players now access games, adding that it would keep focusing its resources on improving access and preserving purchase options through both retail partners and the PlayStation Store. The announcement came days after Rockstar Games said the physical version of Grand Theft Auto VI would not include a disc and would instead carry a code for a digital download.
