Ayyoub Bouaddi's rise gives Morocco a new midfield figure at the World Cup
Ayyoub Bouaddi has emerged as a key figure for Morocco after a standout display against Brazil at the FIFA World Cup. The 18-year-old Lille midfielder has combined a rapid football rise with studies in mathematics.

PARIS: Morocco's 1-1 draw with Brazil in their opening FIFA World Cup match at MetLife Stadium drew attention for the result, but the display of 18-year-old midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi also stood out after just his second senior international appearance.
Bouaddi was named player of the match following a composed performance in midfield against Brazil's experienced trio of Casemiro, Bruno Guimaraes and Lucas Paqueta. He controlled the tempo, completed passes under pressure and repeatedly found space between the lines, reinforcing growing belief in European football that Morocco have identified one of the game's leading young midfield prospects.
Rapid development at Lille
Born in Senlis, France, in 2007 to Moroccan parents, Bouaddi started his football at AFC Creil before moving to Lille's academy in 2021. His progress was swift. At 16, he became one of the youngest players to appear in European competition when he made his senior debut for Lille in the UEFA Conference League. He then signed his first professional contract as the French club moved to secure his future.
Bouaddi's career has developed alongside an academic path. He earned his scientific baccalaureate with highest honours at 16 and is now studying for a bachelor's degree in mathematics through distance learning at Aix-Marseille University. Bouaddi said his studies remain important alongside football. "Mathematics is my safety net. A football career is uncertain. Studying keeps my mind active," he added.
People who have worked with him see a connection between his academic interests and his style of play. His reading of angles, space and timing has become a defining part of his game, with former coaches describing him as a player who processes situations faster than others on the pitch. Rather than forcing play, he waits for openings to emerge and positions himself to win the ball back instead of chasing it.
Switch to Morocco
Bouaddi also drew notice away from the field in 2023 when he won a national public-speaking competition for academy players in France. He impressed judges with a speech arguing that how football is played matters as much as the result.
After representing France at youth level, Bouaddi switched allegiance to Morocco earlier this year. Morocco obtained FIFA approval before including him in their World Cup squad. Head coach Mohamed Ouahbi and officials from the Royal Moroccan Football Federation were reported to have played a key role in persuading him that his international future should be with the Atlas Lions.
That decision has already brought an early return. Against Brazil, Bouaddi appeared comfortable in tight areas and rarely rushed in possession, helping Morocco control midfield for long spells against one of the tournament favourites. His progress has drawn attention from major European clubs tracking him since his breakthrough at Lille.
Key role ahead of Netherlands tie
Comparisons with Portugal midfielder Vitinha have become more frequent, while others have seen similarities with former France international Abou Diaby because of his elegance and ability to carry the ball through midfield. For Morocco, Bouaddi could become a central figure in a new generation seeking to add more technical control to the organisation, discipline and resilience that underpinned the country's run to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals.
Morocco are due to face the Netherlands in the Round of 32 on Tuesday morning, with midfield control expected to be crucial against a side capable of punishing mistakes. Bouaddi is set to carry responsibility for setting possession, breaking opposition lines and supplying the calmness that has quickly become associated with his game.
At 18, Bouaddi remains at an early stage of his career, but his performance against Brazil suggested Morocco may already have found a player capable of shaping the team's next phase.
