LAHORE: A 37-year-old man wanted in multiple criminal cases died after an alleged police encounter in Gulberg late on Saturday night, according to police.

Police said a team headed by SHO Rana Abdul Ghaffar had established a checkpoint near Kamalabad graveyard when two men riding a motorcycle opened fire and tried to escape. During the exchange, Ghulam Mohiuddin, a resident of Chak 55-JB Baba Bakala, was wounded.

According to police, Mohiuddin was hit by gunfire allegedly fired by his own accomplices. He was taken to Allied Hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

Police said the deceased was wanted in dozens of cases registered in different districts, including a recent extortion-related firing case that had circulated widely on social media. A case has been registered against the suspect who fled, and raids are under way to arrest him.
