Iraqi forces launch Green Zone raids in Baghdad

BAGHDAD: Iraqi security forces carried out raids inside Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone early Sunday in an operation aimed at detaining officials and politicians, according to two security sources cited by AFP.

The Green Zone contains key state and diplomatic sites, including the US embassy, other foreign missions, international institutions and government offices. Senior politicians and top officials also reside in the area. AFP correspondents said security was heavily reinforced at the zone’s entrances during the operation.

Footage circulated on local Telegram channels appeared to show security personnel moving through the area in heavy military vehicles, including tanks. Some clips showed forces inside a compound and, in one case, inside a house.

One security official, speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity, said the large-scale operation was intended to arrest senior Iraqi officials and politicians. The official said a raid targeted several politicians over financial corruption, per judicial orders, and added that anti-terrorism forces and the military took part in the raids.
